Estella – Najera 82km

After Estella the scenery changes. The vineyards take over the horizon. By the trail we find one of the biggest wine producers in the county of Navarra: the convent of Bodegas de Irache. There is an interesting fountain set up to quench the thirst of the hikers by the convent: one tap for water, the other one for red wine. Because the day is only starting and we have a long way to go ahead of us, unfortunately I have to be content with just a small ‘tasting sip’! There are vineyards as far as the eye can see. After the Navarra area the trail goes through the county of Rioja. It so happens that the most famous wines of Spain are produced in La Rioja, so I will probably be able to get my share of wine after the small ‘setback’ this morning.

The day’s route was dazzlingly beautiful. Small paths and roads meander on top of hills covered with vineyards. Also the sun showed up, so the wayfarers could enjoy hot weather.
